April update from Jamie’s Farm Monmouth

Springtime is always a highlight on the farm and it always feels such a privilege to be able to share this with our visiting groups. We started the month welcoming Carew Academy back to the farm. Highlights included our first Lowline calf being born, feeding and checking the sheep ahead of lambing, making a wonderful daffodil display for our Welcome Barn and exploring the local area including Cleddyn Falls.

During our Easter break we started lambing. Shout-out to our Farm Manager, Dan, who has worked day and night making sure our ewes and lambs are well cared for as well as looking after our other animals across the farm.

After Easter it was great to have Barnet and Harrow Virtual School. They worked incredibly hard and brought lots of joy with them to the farm. We had some wonderful walks in the woods, which were filled with incredible greenery and dappled lighting.

We were then delighted to welcome a new Welsh partner, Hawthorn High School. They really impressed us with their energy and enthusiasm and were a great help in the lambing shed. We loved playing games together and ended the week with some fantastic hill rolling and a game of rugby.

Lambing has been successful, an earlier start than expected with most lambing in the first two weeks. Luckily the weather has improved in most parts, so lambs and ewes are enjoying a bite of fresh spring grass.

The Lowline cattle have started having their calves, lots of boys and a few girls. Their names have to start with M this year and we are getting lots of great suggestions from our young visitors.

The chickens are laying with keenness and a few are dedicated to sitting on their eggs, which is a real sign that spring is really trying, despite the trees taking a while to wake from winter slumber.

The hedges planted last winter have really taken off and our young orchard is in blossom.

We are very excited to be hosting our Open Day Saturday 13th July, a chance for the community and visitors to come and see the farm, meet some of the team, and learn more about what we do, as well as enjoying some delicious food and hopefully some glorious sunshine! Please do sign up if you would be interested to come along on the day.
