As Youth Champions, we’re committed to attending several weekend residential visits to the farms through the year. These trips are a chance for us to get together, talk about how Jamie’s Farm can improve what they do, and just have fun too!
On July 6th, 11 of us from across the UK came together for the very first time at the Hereford farm—and what a weekend it was! We got to know each other by playing games after dinner, going for walks and taking care of the farm animals during feeding rounds. We even got to cook for each other, and one of the highlights was hiking up Skirrid mountain (and rushing back down just in time to catch the England match!). Safe to say, that’s a core memory for a few of us now.
But honestly, my favourite moment was the bonfire debrief on the last night. Sitting around the fire, doing our final check-in and sharing our favourite moments, with everyone laughing—it was one of those times you never forget.
During the weekend, we also got stuck into some important conversations about Jamie’s Farm’s Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion policy. We split into groups to dive into case studies, sharing our thoughts and discussing how we feel about certain topics. For example, instead of being called “children,” we prefer “young adults”—small but important changes! We also talked about the barriers between students and teachers, why it’s sometimes hard to trust them, and how to build stronger relationships.
We wrapped up by voting for two Co-Chairs who will be the voice for the rest of the Youth Champions behind the scenes. And I’m so excited to say that Georgie and I (Iram!) were chosen. We can’t wait to represent the group and keep things moving forward!
